Russia launched a New moon mission, the first after 47 years. the rocket Soyuz was carrying the Luna 25 probe It was launched at 1.10am on Friday 11th August From Vostochny Cosmodrome. The spacecraft will reach lunar orbit in five days and will stay there for three to seven days to choose the correct landing point in the lunar south pole region. According to a Roscosmos source, the agency expects the moon landing around August 21. The mission of the spacecraft, which will remain on the lunar surface for a year, will be to “take (samples) and analyze the soil” as well as “carry out long-term scientific research.” According to the agency’s director, General Yuri Borisov, Roscosmos is planning other lunar missions in the coming years: Luna-26 in 2027, Luna-27 in 2028, and Luna-28 in 2030 or later.
Returning to the moon is an ambitious goal that Russia seeks to achieve without the cooperation of Europe, after it was halted after the invasion of Ukraine. Bringing man back to the moon to stay there: it was this goal that prompted the European Space Agency and its Russian counterpart Roscosmos in 2015 to join a series of missions (Luna-25, Luna-26 and Luna-27) aimed at checking the conditions for a permanent human settlement on our natural satellite, thus realizing a dream that was abruptly interrupted in the 1970s.
