Couple brought together through music

Baylor University couple brought together through their common love of music.

Prior to pursuing their dreams in teaching, two music lovers kindled their relationships before graduating from Baylor University.

Austin and Megan Montgomery met in 2014 and began their relationship soon after. Though the beginning of their relationship was rocky, they were able to shape beauty out of it with music and a common passion in dance and a capella. The two performed in Baylor University’s a capella group, Virtuoso, which competed in the International Championship of Collegiate A Capella (ICCA). In 2015, Virtuoso placed fourth at the national championship against collegiate teams throughout the United States and across the world.

After the placement at ICCA , the couple chose to take a step back from the a capella group and a step forward to their career in music. Following their graduation in 2016, the Montgomerys, who recently married in July 2016, moved to Houston, Texas, to begin teaching. As freshly graduated teachers, the Montgomerys realized how lucky they were to be in the system they were placed in.

In Texas, teachers, especially liberal arts teachers, make up to $30,000 more than teachers in other states. “We were fortunate to have gotten positions in Texas right off the bat, especially because of our high salary,” said Austin Montgomery. The couple have taught at two districts since the beginning of their teaching career but currently both work in Deer Park School District directing choirs at two separate middle schools. “I love what I do,” said Megan Montgomery.
