DIY night promotes student stress relief
The scent of sugar and honey filled the air of the Oasis conference room in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center. Making her own face scrub, Erica Garcia was able to forget the stress of her upcoming midterms.
Garcia, a sophomore at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, made a sugar and honey exfoliating scrub and a black tea scrub at the DIY event hosted by UNL Resilient Women. She said she plans to use both masks at home in the future, since they were affordable.
Resilient Women, a recognized student organization, hosted the event on March 9 in order to offer UNL students an opportunity to create homemade face masks and take part in a discussion about the importance of mental health.
Resilient Women strives to unite all women from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds in order to continuously improve the status of women according to its website. Mishala Lewis, senior anthropology major and president of the RSO, said the main goal of the group is to support, motivate and strengthen all women on campus and in the Lincoln community.
Resilient Women event organizer Audassi Foster said the need for this event stems from seeing her peers deal with stress in unhealthy ways, such as not eating or pulling all-nighters.
“Lately, with midterms going on, I see a lot of people stressing, there are a lot of things going on,” Foster said. “It seems right now, they needed something like this.”
Garcia said DIY night was simple, but applicable to what’s going on in her life right now.
“As a college student, midterms can be really stressful,” Garcia said. “It was nice to be reminded that I need to take time for myself.”
Lewis said the main purpose of the event was giving students a chance to deal with their stress in healthy ways, but it was also important to show attendees practicing self care can be affordable for college students, so all of the ingredients used were under $5.
“I liked that [the masks] were made with common household materials,” Garcia said. “The girls running the event gave us price estimates so I felt like they really understood my financial situation.”
According to Garcia, when the semester begins to pick up, it can be easy for students to shrug off self-care. But she said it’s important to take proper care of yourself so you don’t get burnt out.
“In order to put your best foot forward, you might want to get a pedicure first,” Garcia said. “If you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t put your full effort into the things that are important.”
Garcia said not just college students who get stressed, it’s people in general, and it’s nice to get a reminder to take care of yourself.
“Hosting events and saying, ‘It’s OK to take time for yourself and you’re not selfish for doing so,’ is a great reminder for people like me who often forget to do stuff like that,” Garcia said.
