In August 2014, Julian Tirtadjaja, 21, packed all of his belongings into two suitcases and flew to the United States for the first time. He moved into the business student learning community in Eastside Suites at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

After applying to over 10 schools, Tirtadjaja accepted scholarship money from UNL and registered for his classes in preparation for his freshman year.

Tirtadjaja is a junior supply chain management and economics major from Jakarta, Indonesia. He didn’t experience as much culture shock as he expected with moving across the globe.

The biggest misconception people have about Indonesia is that we drive on the left side, but Jakarta is very similar to America and we drive on the right side of the road, Tirtadjaja said.

Tirtadjaja said that the thing he was looking forward to most about attending UNL was American football.

“I love Husker football,” he said. “I’ve had student tickets since my freshman year.”

Tirtadjaja has also gotten involved in photography and rugby on campus.

“My favorite part of going to school in the United States is that I get to experience the true American college experience,” he said.

One of the biggest challenges of moving to Nebraska is the cold weather.

“We don’t have seasons back home in Jakarta,” Tirtadjaja said. “I had to buy a winter coat when I moved here.”

One of the biggest similarities between the U.S. and Indonesia was in the education system, he said. He went to an international high school in Indonesia where he said the studies were very similar.

He now lives with some friends he met his freshman year in the business learning community. He said his favorite part about getting involved in a learning community was the opportunity to make new and lasting friendships while continually meeting new people.
