Crisp fall weekends mean only one thing for Valerie Schultz: Husker football.

“I’m a diehard through and through,” said the petite, brown-haired Omaha native. “I wouldn’t miss a football Saturday for anything.”

Whether she is watching the game at home, tailgating at the usual spot in a parking lot west of Memorial Stadium or lucky enough to actually be among the fans at the game, Schultz does all she can to support her favorite team.

“I can’t even count the number of games I’ve been to, there have been so many,” she said.

When she doesn’t have tickets to the game, Schultz knows how to tailgate in style.

Several years ago, a group of her friends bought an old camping trailer and fixed it up, Husker-style. They gutted the inside and hung memorabilia from the team’s five national title games. Someone’s grandmother hand-embroidered the red and white couch cushions. A high-definition television and surround sound system was installed on the outside of the trailer, covered by an overhead awning.

“I didn’t have to do any of the dirty work,” Schultz said. “But the trailer is awesome. It’s our little tradition, our way to celebrate for all the games.”

A coat of scarlet paint covers the outside of the trailer. Schultz’s favorite phrase is painted in large white letters across one side: “Go Big Red.”
