Threads, a Meta app to compete with Twitter, will not be immediately available in EU countries

Threads, the app developed by Meta to compete with Twitter, will be available for download on Thursday, July 6 in the US and UK, but not in the European Union. Sources within Meta said that in the EU’s 27 member states, implementation will be delayed because the company still needs to resolve some issues with threads using personal data to comply with European regulations on the matter.

In fact, Threads, like all other social networking commercial platforms, must be subject to the Digital Markets Act, the European law approved a year ago that contains provisions on sharing user data. Meta will wait for further clarification from the European Commission on how to implement the legislation before deciding what to do. In the United States, where laws protecting users’ online privacy are virtually non-existent, Meta has already informed the public that it will collect a significant amount of user data, including location, purchase history, locations, financial information, contacts, and other sensitive information.

Meta — which already controls Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram — has been talking for months that it’s working on an app that offers an alternative to Twitter, which many users find to be messier and less functional than it has been since it was bought by Elon Musk last October.
