Andrea Gianni’s France will play in the men’s volleyball gold medal final. This evening, Wednesday, August 7, Italy lost 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-21) against hosts France.
Fefè De Giorgi’s national team will play for the bronze medal, beating Poland against the USA. Not quite as exciting a comeback as the one against Japan this time, but ours is one of the top four Olympic national teams in the world.
A stark disappointment among our players who, unlike the French, were unable to show their best volleyball. The match was very close at 21-19 only in the first set, before France extended the lead to 25-20.
In the second set, a similar script with our team finding a solution to retaliate against the opponents. The 17-15 lead, however, proved illusory and the French rallied in the second half. Expect a comeback like the one against Japan, and think back to how many matches this Olympics has been down 3-2.

However, France won this evening. Even Boro’s entry for Micheletto will not change the fate of this semi-final. Tomorrow, Thursday 8th August, at 8pm, Julio Velasco’s Women’s Italvolley team beat Serbia 3-0. In the quarter-finals they will face Turkey in the semi-finals.
After Los Angeles 1984 (Bronze), Sydney 2000 (Bronze), Beijing 2008 (Bronze), Italy-USA Friday at 4pm will be the third 3rd-4th place final in Italian team history. ) and London 2012 (Bronze).
The final between France and Poland in their quest for an Olympic berth after Tokyo 2020 will be played on Saturday 10 August at 1pm.
