Valve appears to be testing support for some games for ARM64.

Date:

Valve appears to be testing ARM64 and Android support on SteamAccording to what SteamDB found. Some very popular games, such as Left 4 Dead 2 and Garry’s Mod, have been tested in versions labeled “proton-arm64”. The community has begun to speculate about the arrival of Valve hardware based on the ARM64 architecture (Steam Deck?), although it may just be a way to increase the reach of Steam in ways that are not hard to imagine and could yield huge results.

Steam is becoming increasingly popular.

There is talk of ARM64 architecture integration and Android app support.A new update with App ID 3043620 has been spotted on SteamDB and is linked to an unknown app, codenamed “ValveTestApp3043620,” and includes major changes that support this scenario.

Left 4 Dead 2 in game

Several game names were mentioned in the update, such as: Left 4 Dead 2, Garry’s Mod, Kerbal Space Program, and Shadow of Mordorwhich now bear the tags “proton-arm64” and “proton-arm64e”, among others like “proton-arm64ec”. There are also other interesting tags like “proton_experimental” and “proton-arm64ec-vanguard”, possibly referring to experimental builds.

These signs suggest that Valve is actively testing a version of Proton, the software that allows Windows games to run on Linux, designed specifically for ARM64-based systems. The compatibility layer was developed by Valve in collaboration with CodeWeavers..

Adding support for ARM64 would be very important, considering that we are talking about processors that are very popular on mobile devices. Speculation suggests that Valve’s tests are targeting a new VR headset or Steam Deck based on ARM.
