Amazon invites employees to the office 5 days a week

Date:

“We want to operate like the world’s biggest startup,” he said in the letter. “That means having a passion for continuous innovation for customers, a strong sense of urgency (for most big opportunities, it’s a race!), a high sense of ownership, quick decision-making, disruption and economics, a deeply connected collaboration (you have to be united with your teammates when inventing and solving difficult problems) and a shared commitment to each other.”

Most of Amazon’s roughly 1.5 million employees worldwide are hourly workers who retrieve items and ship packages, people for whom remote work has never been an option. But the company also employs hundreds of thousands of workers: It had about 350,000 on the eve of its largest-ever layoffs, which began in late 2022.

The news is likely to boost traffic in cities where Amazon operates. These include Seattle, where the company is the largest, as well as locations such as Arlington, Virginia, the San Francisco Bay Area, Austin, Boston and Nashville.

The company’s previous efforts to bring employees back to the office have faced resistance from some employees, who have accused the company of being inflexible and failing to provide data showing that in-person work led to better outcomes. “Maintaining a strong culture is not a given,” Jassy wrote. “We always have to work at it.”
