A favorite student spot on campus now looks better thanks to Donald and Lorena Meier. The area between Selleck Hall and the student union on City Campus was dedicated, in front of about 100 people, as the Donald and Lorena Meier Commons and Plaza July 9.
"The event was great," Annette Wetzel, Director of the Visitors Center and Special Events at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, said.
The additions of a seating area, a colonnade structure and new plantings were made to the area that already sees many games of frisbee and free movie screenings for students throughout the year.
Donald Meier graduated from UNL in 1941. Both Meier's were involved in the production of shows such as Mutual of Omaha's "Wild Kingdom" and "Zoo Parade."
Included in the gift of the re-modeled commons from the couple was funding to help maintain the green space forever, Robb Crouch, Director of Public Relations for the University of Nebraska Foundation, said.
Even more than donating money for the commons and plaza, the Meiers continue to fund scholarships for UNL students.
“While the Meier Commons and Plaza provide a beautiful visual example of our appreciation to Don and Lorie Meier, the best tribute we can offer is the achievement of students who receive support from one of their scholarship funds," Clarence Castner, CEO of the University of Nebraska Foundation, said at the dedication.
"They are so generous, thoughtful and committed to education," Wetzel said.
