Young Huskers ready for tough schedule

After two wins in exhibition play, the Nebraska women’s basketball team faces a tough schedule in its inaugural Big Ten season.

Jordan Hooper scored 28 points to lead the Nebraska women’s basketball team to a 85-55 victory over Nebraska-Kearney at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Sunday.

Redshirt freshman Rebecca Woodberry said the schedule should help prepare the team for what’s ahead. “I feel like the schedule will be a great challenge for such a young and inexperienced team,” Woodberry said. “It will also prepare us for the competition we will soon be facing in the Big Ten.”

Nebraska, which includes All Big 12 players in Lindsey Moore and Jordan Hooper, has six freshman on a 12-member team.

The young Huskers will open regular season play Nov. 12, taking on Arkansas Pine Bluff at Devaney.

USC, Creighton and ACC powers Georgia Tech and Florida State also headline the Huskers non-conference play before they head into their first action against Big Ten teams.

The No. 23 women of Troy are coming off a 24-13 season in 2010-11. USC advanced to the postseason WNIT championship game and are led by the former NBA standout Michael Cooper. The Trojans also return four starters including Jackie Gemelos and Briana Gilbreath.

After Thanksgiving, the Huskers will battle back-to-back road games against FSU and Georgia Tech in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Both teams were top-25 RPI teams that represented the ACC in the 2011 NCAA tournament.

“Those two games on the road are going to be really challenging for our young players,” said Connie Yori, Nebraska women’s basketball coach. “They are going to have experience and the home court on their side.”

Nebraska will return home on Dec. 8 for its in-state showdown with Creighton. The Bluejays, who made it to the WNIT, are coming off an 18-13 season.

The Huskers will open Big Ten play against Penn State on Dec. 30.

Olinda Olson, center, said her family’s love and faith in God has helped her in her long battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Olson is surrounded by her family at her son’s wedding, from left, Jared, husband Rich, Drew and Kindra.

Twenty nine years ago, Olinda Olson thought she had three to five years to live.

Instead she’s beat the odds for patients diagnosed with “Lou Gehrig’s” disease, the more common name for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Her battle hasn’t been easy. Olson is paralyzed and uses a wheelchair. She also eats with a feeding tube because she can no longer swallow. Yet Olson credits God, her husband, Rich, and children Drew, Jared and Kindra for inspiring her to live a life full of understanding and purpose.

“There was one request I made of the Lord,” she said. “I asked if I could live long enough to see my children graduate from high school.” In 1998, her 16-year-old prayer was answered when she watched her youngest son, Drew, graduate from Concordia University.

Olson hasn’t been the only one inspired on her nearly 30-year journey with the disease; she’s also inspired many by giving others a different perspective on life.

Olinda has been married to Rich Olson, a retired high school girls’ basketball coach, for 40 years. He’s not surprised by his wife’s courage.

“She’s very tough and very driven and she always has been,” he said. “She has far exceeded the limitations of this disease. We haven’t beaten it but we are conquering it.”

Charity Iromuanyna, a player on Rich Olson’s 2005 Class A state championship basketball team, continues to be encouraged by Olinda even years after high school.

“She just has the ability to quickly impact others and is a constant reminder for me to seize all opportunities,” Iromuanya said. “I try to never take a single day for granted and a large part of that is Olinda.”

The ALS Association, which works to combat Lou Gehrig’s disease, estimates that only 5 percent of people with ALS will live 20 years or more. Olinda Olson is one of them.

And while she constantly reminds people of just how precious life is, her inspiration is the love of God and her family.

“I believe that I’m in God’s will and that’s what living is all about.”

Erinn Wakeman has spent her entire life in Lincoln but she’s ready to dream big in a city full of bright lights once she graduates.

“I have lived in Lincoln my entire life. Not that it’s a bad thing, but there is so much this world has to offer,” Wakeman said. “I can always come back,” said the 22-year-old news editorial major. Erinn plans on settling in the Big Apple after graduation and attending graduate school at Columbia University.

” I have always had a love and passion for writing,” Wakeman said. “My whole entire life I have always wanted to move to a big city and New York made sense because Columbia is one of the best journalism schools in the country.”

With a master’s degree from one of the most prestigious journalism schools in the country, she hopes to continue dreaming big with aspirations of someday becoming a writer or reporter for Time Magazine. She would like to write analytical and editorial pieces on national topics and global issues. And when asked why?

“Time has played a very prominent role in journalism in the U.S. for a long time. I like the fact that it is not just the facts of everyday news but they examine different aspects of current issues and I would like to be a part of continuing on that great tradition.”

Story and photos by Erinn Wakeman, NewsNetNebraska

Dominique Kelley is a competitor. A force on the Nebraska women’s basketball team for the past four years, Kelley has goals for herself both on and off the court.

“I’m very driven,” says Kelley, a senior broadcasting major who plans to graduate in December. “I have goals to set and reach. I’m not perfect, but I’m learning a lot about myself and continue to amaze myself.”

One of Kelley’s goals is to become a women’s college basketball coach. She is the assistant coach for Doane College and plans on earning her master’s degree in sports administration.

“Being a coach is the best of both worlds because you are still around the game and get to impact young girls’ lives and help them transform into amazing adults,” says Kelley, who is getting a minor in coaching. “I want to be a coach because I love being around people, I love the game of basketball and it has been extremely rewarding to me.”

Becoming a sports analyst is another dream of Kelley’s, and she says it fueled her interest in broadcasting.

But basketball isn’t Kelley’s only love. Family is incredibly important to Kelley, who loves babysitting her 2-year-old sister and spending time with her four other siblings, her boxer, Cudi, and her fiancé.

Always busy, Kelley is planning her wedding, set for June 2012, attending school for a final semester, and working as a distributor for the ViSalus Body By Vi fitness challenge, which touts a 90-day fitness and nutrition program.

Nique, as she is known to her family and friends, says that her faith is of highest importance to her. “Jesus Christ is the largest aspect of my life, and I truly believe that he as a specific plan for my life.”
