For the first time since November of 2010, Lincoln gas prices have fallen below the $3 a gallon mark according to the Nebraska Energy Office website.

On Thursday, two gas stations in north Lincoln were selling regular gas to customers at the prices of $2.95 and $2.98 a gallon according to Gasbuddy.com. The two stations are North Star Express located at 5700 N 33rd & N 33rd Circle and the Sam’s Club at 4900 N 27th St & Ticonderoga.

Rose White with AAA Nebraska said many factors have contributed to lower fuel prices. One of them have been the relatively low number of hurricanes so far this season.

“A totally uneventful hurricane season has not stopped or impeded any transportation of gasoline getting  to the places it needs to be,” White said.

Marc Housemann is owner/manager of the North Star Express gas station. Housemann say he’s able to sell regular gasoline at $2.98 a gallon because of the way they operate. “We price our own fuel and we base it off what we pay wholesale,” said Housemann. “That’s why we are able to offer such cheap gas. Our prices fluctuate so quickly because we buy so much gas at a time.”

Nebraska and Lincoln gas prices compared to others

Many Nebraska communities are reporting lower prices. In Omaha, regular unleaded is priced at an average gallon price of $2.91. Grand Island is at $3.08, and Lincoln is selling at an average of $3.18 a gallon. The lowest gas prices in the state are found in Bellevue at $2.90 a gallon. The highest average gas prices are in Table Rock at $3.82 a gallon.

Stategas-prices

“If you look at Nebraska compared to the national average, Nebraska is quite a few cents lower which will be favorable come holiday traveling season,” White said.

Customer’s react to the lower gas prices

Steve Howard of Lincoln is a Sam’s club member and is able to buy Sam’s less expensive gas as part of his membership. Howard noticed the cheaper gas and said if the cheap prices continue, “I’d probably fill it up more often if the price was a little cheaper.”

Jeff Hoffman from Lincoln said he keeps an eye on gas prices and noticed towns outside of Lincoln selling gas for less than $3 a gallon. The cheaper prices however won’t influence him to fill up his tank any sooner than he does now. “I always get to a point where I decide it’s time to fill my tank and I just try to find the cheapest price I can at that time.”

Will the low prices continue?

Will these lower gas prices remain for a while? AAA’s White thinks so. “We expect to see very favorable prices heading into the first quarter of 2014.”

As the owner of a station, Houseman hopes White is correct. “I hope so (gas prices staying low). I hope they stay down during the holiday season.”

Update: As of 9:00 p.m. central time, Gasbuddy.com is now reporting 13 Lincoln gas stations they are selling regular gas below $3.
