Story and photo by Katie Bane, NewsNetNebraska
Bethany Schmidt has traveled to Brazil and India as part of a photojournalism project and has attended two different universities, 1,600 miles apart, all while figuring out which profession she preferred.
But she honestly thinks she is the most boring person on the planet.
“There are so many opportunities when you’re a high school senior,” she said. “I wanted to try them all.”
She ultimately settled on journalism because it enabled her to immerse herself in all her interests. One week she might work on a story about ocean waves and the next week she might cover the crime beat. While Schmidt isn’t sure of her future job title, she admitted she hates writing but is interested in graphic design and photojournalism.
When she isn’t trekking through Brazil on assignment, Schmidt interns at Nebraska Watchdog, a site that monitors state politics. And during the summer she works at the nation’s largest softball complex in Hastings, Neb., serving fans soft pretzels with cheese and cotton candy.
Schmidt hopes her profession takes her far from Nebraska because she has lived in Hastings in the “same house in the same neighborhood in the same city” her whole life.
