Charlie Janssen was born and raised in eastern Nebraska and made the decision to join the U.S. Navy as a Search and Rescue swimmer after he graduated from high school. He served from 1989 to 1993 and then came back to Nebraska to attend Wayne State College.

Janssen was a member of the Fremont City Council and a number of other civic organizations and was elected as a legislator for District 15 in 2008. His interest in politics stems from his parents and his uncle, former Sen. Ray Janssen, who were involved in politics. His mother was a village clerk in Nickerson, Neb.

Janssen is known for his work with job creation, providing tax relief and stopping illegal immigration. He is well known for his fight against illegal immigration during the 2011 legislative session in which he sponsored a bill, mimicking the Arizona immigration enforcement law.

Mike Petersen was raised in Fremont, Neb., and continued his education at Midland University where he is a senior. Petersen worked his way through college and will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history with a minor in religion in May.

Petersen worked in local politics since 2006 and places an emphasis on economic development. He is focusing his campaign on developing the economics in communities, like Fremont, and the rural parts of the state. Petersen is passionate about finding solutions for the illegal immigration issue and protecting natural resources in the state.

Petersen is employed by Food 4 Less and is the chairman of the store’s Safety Council.
