Music has been a part of Michael Todd’s life forever, he says. Now that he’s a student at UNL, he spends every Sunday interviewing musicians and spinning CDs for KRNU, the university’s radio station. In his off-time he works as a station music director.

Someday, says Todd, he’d like to be a recording engineer in the Northwest. That, he says, is where the music production scene is on the rise.

The senior news and editorial major hails from Alliance, Neb., seven hours west of Lincoln. His move to study at the College of Journalism and Mass Communication was a good fit for his interest in radio and communications. It helped that he won a Regents Scholarship, a highly competitive award, to attend UNL.

“Other people from Alliance were going into journalism and it best covered some of the other areas I was interested in as well,” said Todd.

After training in journalism at CoJMC, Todd is ready to jump on a job in news if the right one opens up. He also said he’s more than willing to be a rock star, too.

Senior Broadcast Major Kara VanLandingham’s frequent flyer miles account has been growing since she was just a little girl.

Growing up in New York for half her life, she made the shift from the northeast to the southwest heading to warmer weather. Spending another big chunk of her life in Santé Fe, New Mexico where she fell in love with the idea of being a Journalist.

“I am just curious with people’s stories and what happens behind the scenes,” said VanLandingham.

VanLandingham traded in the sunglasses for snow boots and came to Lincoln, Nebraska where she began to chase her dreams of being a sports entertainment journalist.

“There is a lot more sun there, not as pretty here in Lincoln but I do like the family like atmosphere. It would be a good place to raise a family” said VanLandingham.

One of the big steps towards her dreams came when she covered the Omaha Nighthawks first game. The Nighthawks joined the UFL in 2010. VanLandingham interviewed Quarterback Jeff Garcia and also interview singer Nelly who performed a concert after the game.

Either way, you can expect to see her name on the frequent flyers Hall of Fame list when it’s all said and done.

Sports are a passion for many people. But for Derek Brandt, being passionate about sports got him his job.

“I used to work at a magazine called Big Red Report,” said Brandt, referring to a Lincoln magazine devoted to Husker sports. “I made some contacts there who recommended me for a job in the athletic department.”

Although he is also employed as a member of the wait staff at the Nebraska Club, a member-only restaurant in Lincoln, what he considers to be his “real” job takes place in the bowels of Memorial Stadium.

“I’m the sports information director for the swimming and bowling teams,” Brandt said. His duties include setting up interviews with the media and coordinating those interviews. He also creates media and recruiting guides, which are used by the university to grab the attention of high school prospects.

Although he has been a member of the department for six months, he is already looking for the opportunity to advance.

“My goal is to get promoted or get promoted to another school with a higher profile sport,” Brandt said. He added that his dream job would be as media director for football, because with high-profile sports come greater opportunities.

“If you are doing football, you are the media relations director, or like here at Nebraska, you are the assistant athletic director,” Brandt said.

Regardless of what sport he works in, Brandt, a native of Columbus, Neb., just wants to find a job that suits him, at a school where he feels comfortable with what he is doing.

“I would love to work for a school like Florida, Cal or Kansas; any school with high-profile sports.”

Erin Grant: Like Ari Gold (just nicer)

It sounds like the basis to a years-long study: Does a television show have the power to alter one’s career path?

“Well, initially I wanted to write, and I was in fashion journalism for a while, but I realized there wasn’t much hope for a steady income,” said Erin Grant, a senior news-editorial major at UNL. “So then I watched ‘Entourage’ and saw I wanted to be exactly like Ari Gold [a talent agency co-founder], just nicer.”

Subscribing to the philosophy that fashion is wearable art, Grant has quickly shifted her aspirations: Being the president of a public relations firm is all she hopes for. Over the course of this short time-frame, she has traveled from watching the HBO network to completing an internship this past summer in New York City with a fashion designer. She “loved every minute of being out there,” gaining indispensable experience all the while.

“I learned that you can build a brand from the bottom up with a mere sense of style.”

Her buoyant personality and penchant for adapting to the times dovetail with fashion’s ever-changing landscape. She said the ways in which a public relations firm is charged with reaching a different demographic with each message it creates should keep the minutia of a longtime job at bay. That, and she can synthesize her business and creative sides.

With her last semester as an undergrad underway, Grant hopes to return to New York City as soon as possible. Oh, and that post as president would be nice, too.

Carly Shinn left her home in Lenexa, Kan. to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for something different. Now the junior news-editorial and international studies major is seeking to go somewhere even more unlike what she knows: New Dehli, India.

Shinn, who has never traveled abroad, hopes to be selected to go to India this summer with faculty and students from the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. The two-week trip in July will focus on reporting stories about social issues and poverty in India.  The experience, she said, would help further her career goals.

“I’ve always been focused on humanitarianism and social issues,” said Shinn, who hopes to work with a humanitarianism organization or the government to affect social change. She is also considering joining the Peace Corps after she graduates.

Particular issues she cares about include  the Invisible Children project to free child soldiers in Africa and the global water crisis.

Andrew McClure: An aspiring law school student

Andrew McClure is studying journalism as a pathway to law.

“I am going to apply to law school in the fall,” he said. “I’ll be applying to UNL law and a few other places. I’m leaning toward staying at UNL though.”

Beyond law school, McClure isn’t sure where his future lies. In fact, his road to a journalism degree was different than most students. It wasn’t about a career path at all.

“I added the news editorial major in my sophomore year as a way to further my writing skills,” he said. “I figured the writing would come in handy no matter where I end up in life.”

As for where he ends up after law school, McClure is letting that sort itself out later.

“I really don’t have a clue what I’ll be doing,” he said.” Whatever I do, I would like to be successful.”

McClure’s living destination of choice remains Nebraska. Regardless of occupation, he enjoys the state and the comfort it provides, along with the proximity to the mountains.

“I’d enjoy staying in Nebraska, as long as I am able to go skiing in Colorado. I love Colorado.”

From the time he was young, McClure had an ideal dream job that is comparable to most men at one point or another, as well.

“I’d like to be an astronaut, although I won’t have an engineering degree or anything like that. But who knows? Perhaps they’ll need lawyers in space.”
